The soil line is where most artificial trees give themselves away: a disc of grey cement, or a scattering of pebbles that look exactly as arranged as they are. This one is finished with decorative moss over the pebbles, which is the same thing a florist would do and for the same reason — moss reads as organic and hides the hard edge where trunk meets fill. Above it, rubber-fabric leaves with genuine texture and adjustable wire branches on a seven-foot frame.

How it lives in the room

Treat the soil line as decor

Fluff the moss so it sits unevenly, higher at the trunk and thinner at the rim. Perfectly level moss looks like a doormat; irregular moss looks like a plant that has been in the pot a while.

Refresh the moss
