Six open shelves at three different heights on either side of a dining table is an unusual amount of storage to build into one piece of furniture. It is the answer to a dining room with no sideboard: plates, bowls and everyday kitchen things go into the table itself, at heights chosen so the tall things have somewhere to stand. How it lives in the room

Use the oval in a narrow room

At 31.5 inches wide this is a slim table for its length, and the rounded ends are what let people pass at the corners. In a long narrow dining room an oval works where a rectangle of the same length does not.

Plan the shelves by height

Three different shelf heights per side is an invitation to sort by object rather than by category. Tall things at the open end, plates flat in the middle, everyday items where a hand falls naturally.

Consider the second job

At 70.8 inches this doubles convincingly as a desk or a small conference table. If the dining room is also the study, that is a real argument for this piece over a plain six-seater.
