The cabinet in the middle is what separates this from an ordinary folding table. There is a drawer at the top for the flat things — utensils, placemats, pens — and beneath it two adjustable shelves behind cabinet doors, with metal guard rails to stop items sliding when the table is wheeled. How it lives in the room

Set the shelf heights first

Adjustable shelves only get adjusted once, so do it before you load them. Measure your tallest regular item — usually a kettle, a stack of bowls or a blender — and set the gap to that.

Use the guard rails

The rails exist because the cabinet moves. Push items back against them rather than leaving things loose at the front, and nothing rattles when the table rolls.

Wipe the melamine, do not scour

Melamine cleans with water and almost nothing else needed. Abrasive pads leave a dull patch that catches light differently forever after.

A cabinet in the middle means the space under the table is not clear. Chairs pull up to the ends and sides, not to the centre — worth picturing before you count seats.
