A curved profile costs something a straight-sided chest does not. The sides roll away from the front, so the flat part of the top is narrower than the widest point of the cabinet, and anything placed near the ends stands over a falling edge. Put this between a wardrobe and a wall and the curve leaves a tapering gap at each side that no amount of pushing closes. Standing free, in the middle of a wall or at the end of a run, is where the shape earns its keep.

How it lives in the room

Leave the curve some air

Curved sides are designed to be seen, which means they need a few inches of nothing on either side. Wedged against a wardrobe the shape disappears and the gap it leaves becomes the feature instead. An end-of-run position, or dead centre on a wall, is what the profile was drawn for.

Measure the flat, not the widest point

A mirror or a stack of books needs the flat section of the top, which stops short of the overall width on both sides. Take that inner measurement before buying a tray or a lamp with a wide base, because an object that overhangs the curve rocks slightly every time a drawer below it closes.

Five deep drawers, five decisions

Fewer, deeper drawers push the sorting up a level: each one has to be a whole category rather than a shelf for one kind of thing. Decide the five before unpacking anything, with the least-used category at the bottom. Deep drawers filled in laundry order turn into one pile with four lids.

Before you order

The scratch-resistant claim covers the flat top, where the surface is sealed and wipes clean. The fluted fronts are the exposed part: a ring or a belt buckle catches a ridge at exactly the height a hand passes, and a chip on a rib shows more than one on a plain panel.
