The claim on this one is that it expands in seconds, and the construction is what makes that plausible — a straightforward slide with the leaf dropped into the middle, on a base built from a carbon steel frame with 26 mm legs rather than the 25 mm used lower in the range. Closed at 47 inches it is a comfortable four to six; opened to 62 it takes eight. The top is thickened MDF, heat-, scratch- and water-resistant, in a black finish with a textured surface.

How it lives in the room

Test it single-handed

See whether you can open it alone. Some extendable tables genuinely need two people; if this one does not, it will be extended far more often, and that is the whole value of the mechanism.
