How it lives in the room

Photograph the before

Take a phone picture of the tree as it comes out of the box. Shaping happens gradually and it is genuinely hard to judge progress — the before shot is the only honest reference you will have.

Avoid the flat side

The commonest mistake is shaping only the face you look at and leaving the back squashed. If the tree stands in a corner that is fine; if it can be walked around, give the back branches the same twenty minutes.

Set it and leave it
