Forty edge pieces at twelve inches each is forty feet of finished border, and six corners is enough for a rectangle with two to spare. That arithmetic is the whole decision: a six-by-six tiled square has twenty-four feet of perimeter, so one kit finishes it with room left over, while a long garage run of open edge can swallow two. Each strip is 2.4 inches deep and 0.65 thick, which matches the tile height and turns a step into a ramp.

How it lives in the room

Count male against female edges

Interlocking tiles have a tabbed side and a slotted side, so a finished border needs both halves of the kit in the right places. Walk the perimeter before opening the bag and note which edges present tabs and which present slots. Twenty of each is generous for a small floor and exactly balanced only if the field happens to be square; an L-shaped room uses them unevenly.

Check it is the 12 in system

This kit fits the 12 by 12 inch polypropylene tiles and nothing else. The 11.8-inch PVC tiles sold alongside them look near-identical in a photograph and will not accept these strips, and neither will another brand. The difference is two tenths of an inch per tile, which compounds across a row into a border that cannot be made to meet.

Then ramp the doorway first

If only part of the perimeter gets finished, make it the part that people and wheels cross. A 0.65-inch step at a garage door or a patio threshold is a trip hazard and a wheelbarrow stopper; the same step against a back wall is invisible and needs no strip at all. Doing the traffic edges first also leaves spare pieces for wherever the floor grows next.

Before you order

Black strips against grey tiles read as a deliberate border, which some people want and others find busy. The same kit comes in grey if the edge is meant to disappear, and mixing the two colors on one floor rarely looks intentional.
