Pedestal tables are among the easiest furniture to assemble and among the most annoying to get perfectly stable, and both facts come from the same source: everything meets at one central column. The build here is straightforward — numbered parts, pre-drilled holes, a base, a column, a top — and the thing that determines the result is the order in which bolts are tightened. Grey wood-grain MDF, reinforced 25 mm legs on a carbon steel cross, storage shelf under the top.

How it lives in the room

Finger-tight first

Fit every bolt loosely before tightening any of them. A pedestal assembled bolt-by-bolt ends up with the column slightly off square, and nothing you do afterwards will take the lean out.

Tighten in a star pattern

Where several bolts hold one plate, tighten them opposite to opposite rather than round the circle — the same principle as a car wheel, and for the same reason.

Diagnose a wobble properly

Rock the table with a hand, then move it three feet and rock it again. If it wobbles in one place and not the other, the floor is at fault and a shim fixes it; if it wobbles everywhere, a bolt needs tightening.

Before you order

Bolts on a table like this settle in the first month. A quick check with the supplied key after four weeks of use takes two minutes and prevents most later wobbles.
