Rectangular tables seat people by length, and the arithmetic here is straightforward: 70.87 inches along each side takes three place settings at 23 inches each, plus one at each end, which is the eight-person holiday configuration. Six is the everyday number with real elbow room. The construction is the industrial end of the range — a 3.23-inch thick tabletop profile on a reinforced metal frame with bottom support bars, rated to 350 pounds — and two drawers are built into the sides for napkins, mats and cutlery. Chairs are not included.

Do the length arithmetic

Three per side needs 69 inches of usable edge, which this has. Squeeze four per side and you are down to 17 inches each, which is closer than most people will sit willingly.

Buy chairs to the apron

Check the height from the floor to the underside of the frame before choosing chairs — an industrial frame with support bars sits lower than a plain apron, and armchairs will not tuck under it.

Use the drawers for flat things

Side drawers in a table are shallow by nature. Placemats, napkins, cutlery and serving spoons fit; a stack of bowls does not.
