Fluting is having a long moment and it is worth understanding what you are actually buying: a series of vertical ridges that catch light on one side and shadow on the other, so a plain drawer front acquires depth without any change of colour. It photographs beautifully and it lives well, with one caveat that nobody prints on the box — grooves collect dust in a way flat panels do not. Thirty seconds with a dry brush deals with it, and the payoff is a piece that changes character as the light moves across the room during the day.

How it lives in the room

Dust along the grooves

A soft brush or the upholstery head of a vacuum, run vertically with the flutes, clears them in one pass. A cloth just rides the ridges and leaves the valleys.

Light it from the side

Fluting needs raking light to read. A lamp beside the chest rather than directly above it is what makes the texture visible instead of flat.

Check the reveal between drawers

The flutes should line up from drawer to drawer. If one front sits proud after assembly, adjusting the runner screws by a millimetre restores the continuous line.

Before you order

Fluted fronts are moulded, so a scratch across the ridges is more visible than one on a flat panel. Keep belt buckles and keys off the surface when you lean on it.
